How to Reduce Your Klaviyo Bill

Klaviyo charges based on how many profiles you email. Most stores are paying for contacts who never open. Here's how to fix that.

Why Klaviyo bills creep up

Klaviyo's email plans are priced by the number of active profiles in your account. Every contact you can email counts, whether they've opened anything in the last year or not.

So as your list grows, your plan moves up a tier, even if a big part of that list is dead weight.

Six ways to lower it

1. Suppress unengaged contacts

Build a segment of people who haven't opened or clicked in a long time, for example 6–12 months, and haven't bought. Suppress them. Suppressed profiles don't count toward your plan, and you can still keep their data.

2. Run a sunset flow first

Before suppressing, send unengaged people a short "are you still interested?" series. Anyone who engages stays. Everyone else gets suppressed automatically.

3. Remove bounces and bad addresses

Hard bounces, spam traps and fake sign-ups cost you money and hurt deliverability. Clean them out regularly.

4. Don't import cold lists

Uploading old customer lists or contacts who never opted in fills your account with profiles that won't buy. It raises your bill and damages your sender reputation.

5. Check your sign-up forms

Forms with weak offers or bot sign-ups add low-quality profiles. Better forms bring fewer, better contacts.

6. Review your plan regularly

After cleaning your list, check whether you can move down a tier. Also review SMS credits if you use them, since unused credits are easy to overpay for.

Bonus: a cleaner list usually means better deliverability. When you stop emailing people who never open, more of your emails land in the inbox for the people who do.

Common questions

Do suppressed profiles count toward my Klaviyo bill?

No. Suppressed profiles don't count as active profiles, so suppressing unengaged contacts can lower your plan tier.

Will cleaning my list lose me sales?

Not if it's done carefully. Run a sunset flow first and keep recent buyers. Most suppressed contacts weren't opening anyway.
